A Sustainable Future

At Team Roots, we have developed a dream of a multigenerational housing community made up of intersectionality impacted folks in California that share in resources, and their care for one another. The features below help guide us to this vision.

Water System

  • Implemented through a collaboration with LeapFrog Design, the Greywater system takes used water from different sources and treats it using phytoremediation through plants, allowing the water to be reused.

  • Fog catching system will collect water and transport it into our water storage system for later use.

  • With a storage capacity of 530 gal and a collection efficiency of 80% the rainwater system will passively collect rain for daily use.

Energy Efficiency

  • The majority of the house appliances and functions will be powered through solar energy.

  • The windows, hallways, and rooms are all specifically placed to encourage optimal air flow and cooling during warmer seasons.

  • Solar shades will passively block out heat to keep the house cool.

Construction

  • As a modular house, the Roots Home is not build on a construction site, instead it is built off-site in different modules, dramatically reducing costs.

  • The house is built using techniques that reduce waste, labor and material costs, while retaining the same structural stability of a regular home.

  • With a goal to conquer the California Housing Crisis, the Roots House is projected to cost $250,000. A result of the strategies implemented above.
